Whippany Actuation Systems manufactures electro-mechanical actuation systems for the aerospace and defense industries. When demand for specialized parts grew, the company quickly needed to increase production. Whippany could buy a new CNC machine, outsource, or introduce automation with a Universal Robots’-based solution. The decision was simple, the New Jersey-based manufacturer chose to automate.
Manufacturing engineers Phil DeMauro and Russel Harter began researching the available options to automate their CNC machines. They met with a Universal Robots’ distributor, Eric Cortese, to evaluate the collaborative robot’s potential for their business. In just a few meetings, it became clear that using the robot to tend their machines, unattended overnight, would allow them to significantly increase production capacity without the significant expense of sinking money into a new CNC machine.
Patrick Cain, a gear machinist at Whippany, understood the tasks that the robot was capable of doing better than anyone. These included sliding the door open, reaching in, picking up a part, relocating it safely, picking another part, putting it in the machine, sliding the door closed, and instructing the CNC to begin its work.
