When Whippany Actuations Systems, a manufacturer of electro-mechanical actuation systems for the aerospace and defense industries, experienced an increase in demand, the company decided to invest in automation with a Universal Robot. The robot would be capable of tending their CNC machine and working unattended overnight to add two additional shifts to production capacity.
The team looked into various automation solutions but decided to go with the Universal Robot due to its ability to integrate with their existing tools and the fact that it does not require a complex guarding system. The Company’s manager of manufacturing engineering, Phil De Mauro, says, “We were able to implement and program the robot quickly and easily.”
As soon as the new robot was online, it started to increase productivity, and the Company realized a return on investment within a year. The company’s managers have even considered adding a third shift to make the most of the increased output.
De Mauro also credits the robot for helping the company improve quality, and says the Company will be able to produce more parts with less labor per unit than the competitor they are currently outsourcing work to. “We’ve been able to offer better pricing and faster turnaround because of our capacity,” he says.
