A New Jersey Mainstay since 1965, the Whippany Railway Museum brings railroad history to life through historic train exhibits. The museum is a must-see for any railroad enthusiast, and it’s the perfect family outing.
Visit the Whippany Railway Museum to see the largest collection of American-built standard gauge steam locomotives in New Jersey. A highlight is a 120-ton, 112-year-old steam locomotive named “385.” You can enter the cab of this mighty machine and learn all about its power and fire-breathing capabilities as you settle into the engine’s engineer’s seat.
The Whippany Railway Museum is located in the Whippany section of Hanover Township in Morris County, New Jersey. The museum is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays from April through October, 12-4PM.
Ride our Excursion Trains
Experience the thrill of a ride on one of the Museum’s classic steam excursion trains as you travel along the historic Whippanong Trail, a path Washington’s army followed when they marched in the bitter winter of 1779. You’ll pass through the remnants of prehistoric Glacial Lake Passaic and enjoy the thrill of crossing high above the Passaic River on a steel bridge.
There are several themed excursions throughout the year including a Halloween train and a pumpkin patch train that offers a 10-mile, 45-minute round trip ride from Whippany to Roseland and back. Children who purchase tickets can also choose from a selection of pumpkins to decorate and take home.
Celebrate National Ice Cream Month on the Pumpkin Patch Train
On September 15th, children ages 2 and up can spend an afternoon amid the colors of fall as they board the museum’s spooky Pumpkin Patch Train. They’ll get a free, kid-sized pumpkin to take home and a kit with which to decorate it.
Explore the museum to find out more about the history of railroads in the United States, and the evolution of railroad transportation and equipment over the years. There are dozens of railcars and exhibits on display, including the restored 1904 freight house from the Morristown and Erie Railroad, and the classic wooden water tank.
Walk the tracks with a knowledgeable guide who will take you on a tour of the railroad. You’ll see old engines, passenger cars, a station and the railroad yard, where you can admire the museum’s beautiful collection of railroad artifacts.
You’ll also get a closer look at the museum’s archival collections and railroad memorabilia, including a photo collection from the 1930s to 1970s. In addition, you can view photos of famous people who have traveled on the Museum’s trains, such as a portrait of former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
The Museum is run by a volunteer staff that works to preserve the heritage and history of the Railroads of New Jersey through restoration, preservation, interpretation and operation of railroad equipment and artifacts from throughout the state.
