Take a trip back in time to the Golden Age of railroading in New Jersey. At this museum in New Brunswick, visitors can view a vast collection of railroading and transportation artifacts, including railway equipment from the local area. The exhibits are also filled with historical photographs and documents. The Museum is a non-profit organization which relies on donations to support the preservation of its historic rail and transportation collection. The proceeds of the Excursion Train Rides are a significant part of these efforts.

The Whippany Railway Museum is dedicated to preserving the heritage and history of railroading in the greater Hanover Township area of New Jersey. Located in the town of Whippany, the Museum is a non-profit organization which is staffed by volunteers. The Museum is home to an extensive collection of historic rail cars and locomotives, as well as a fully restored 1904 freight house. The Museum also features an indoor and outdoor operating model train gallery.

Originally opened to the public in 1965, the Museum showcases a variety of railroading memorabilia and historical items. The Museum is also home to several of the oldest and most famous steam locomotives in America, including Southern Railway No. 385, a powerful locomotive built in 1907 for fast freight service and U.S. Army No. 4039, a WWII steam locomotive that will be returned to operation at the Museum in the future.

Visitors can also see an array of classic cabooses at the Museum, and even take a trip on a vintage railroad car. The Museum is also a great place for kids to learn about railroading and transportation history. The Museum offers various educational programs and summer camp classes for kids.

The exhibits at the Museum are updated and expanded regularly. One of the most popular is the Mega Model Train Gallery, which is a massive scale replica of the Museum’s classic freight room. The display has over 1,600 feet of track, making it one of the largest model train displays in the world. The display includes over 50 working trains and is a feast for the eyes.

Another popular exhibit is the American Civil War exhibit, which showcases Civil War-era railroading equipment and memorabilia. The exhibits also include a reconstructed 1872 Civil War-era train depot.

Other fascinating exhibits at the Museum include “Trains, Planes and Automobiles”, a tribute to the important role these three forms of transportation played in the growth of New Jersey and Waldwick. This exhibit includes a full-sized replica of the famous Ramapo Valley Railroad ‘WYE’ tracks and other railroad memorabilia, including dining car place settings, railroad lanterns and railroad mail.
