Universal Robots Increases Productivity at Whippany Actuation Systems

Whippany Actuation Systems manufactures motion-control subsystems for the aerospace industry. The Company produces proprietary motion-control components and assemblies that include control electronics, motors, high-power mechanical transmissions, and actuators. Whippany Actuation Systems serves customers in the United States.

When demand for specialized parts spiked, Whippany Actuation Systems, a manufacturer of rotary and linear electromechanical actuation systems for the aerospace industry, faced an important decision: sink a major capital expenditure into a new CNC machine, outsource the work, or introduce automation with a Universal Robots’-based solution. The New Jersey-based company decided to go with the latter.

With a Universal Robots’ collaborative robot integrated with a Robotiq 2-Finger 85 Gripper, the company can now automate a process that previously took up to an hour and a half per part by hand. That frees up employees like gear machinist Patrick Cain to do other tasks that add value to the product, such as inspection and deburring.

As a result, the company’s productivity has increased dramatically. It expects to recoup the initial investment in less than one year and can now afford to take on more work without adding additional personnel.

“From a production standpoint, it’s absolutely been a game changer,” says Phil DeMauro, the company’s manager of manufacturing engineering. “We’re now looking at possibly in-sourcing more work.”

The company is a privately held, profitable, for-profit manufacturer registered in the System for Award Management (SAM) and supplies goods to U.S. federal government agencies through prime contract awards. Contracts received by the company include a $1.9 million definitive contract from Army Aviation and Missile Command for CH-47F helicopter spares; an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract from Air Force Sustainment Center to remanufacture B-1B electromechanical actuator assemblies; and several other purchase orders from the Army, Navy, and Air Force to supply flight control products to various rotary aircraft platforms.

Whippany Actuation Systems is firmly committed to equal employment opportunity and compliance with all federal, state, and local laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding), gender identity or expression, race (including traits historically associated with race, such as hair texture and protective styles, including braids, locks, and twists); religious beliefs or practices, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, or marital status.
