Whippany Actuation Systems manufactures proprietary, highly engineered aerospace electromechanical motion control subsystems for both commercial and military applications. Its products include control electronics, motors and high power mechanical transmissions. The Company provides electromechanical actuators for use on aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Airbus A380 and Embraer regional jets and on defense platforms like the Sikorsky SH-60 and S-92 helicopters and Boeing Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
In an effort to reduce maintenance costs and improve reliability, the industry is moving away from pneumatic and hydraulic actuation to electrically powered solutions. These systems provide the same performance as the traditional actuation system but are much less costly to maintain over time because they do not require compressed air or hydraulic fluid. Additionally, they operate with a higher level of precision, allowing the flight crew to more easily control them for more reliable performance.
Actuators on aircraft perform a variety of critical functions including adjusting flight controls surfaces such as the rudder, ailerons and elevators; opening and closing cargo or weapon bay doors; positioning engine inlet guide vanes and thrust reversers; and extending and retracting landing gear. Actuation technologies to source the control signals and power for these actuators have evolved over time from manual sources like cables and rods to electromechanical solutions that utilize electric currents, magnetic fields and electromechanical clutches and brakes.
Whippany Actuation Systems is firmly committed to Equal Employment Opportunity and compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws prohibiting employment discrimination on the basis of sex (including pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding), gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, race (including traits historically associated with race such as hair texture and protective styles of natural or chemically treated hair), creed, religion, color, national origin or ancestry, AIDS/HIV status, physical or mental disability, marital or domestic partner status, age, veteran or military service or a genetic characteristic.
