Whippany Actuation Systems designs, manufactures and supports electric actuation solutions for aerospace. The company develops flight control products that support applications for commercial aircraft, rotorcraft and unmanned systems. It provides aerospace components like motor controllers, regenerative power units and linear jack assemblies. Whippany Actuation Systems also provides primary and emergency landing gear and door release, free-fall sequencing actuation and control components. The company serves customers in the United States.
Through prime contract awards, Whippany Actuation Systems supplies actuators and motors to the Department of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Defense Logistics Agency in support of various rotary aircraft platforms. The company was recently awarded a $1.9 million definitive contract from the Army Aviation and Missile Command for CH-47F helicopter spares, a $556 thousand indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract from the Air Force Sustainment Center to remanufacture B-1B electro-mechanical actuator assemblies, as well as purchase orders for shipboard and aviation electro-mechanical actuators.
To help meet demand for its specialized parts and increase production capacity, the New Jersey-based manufacturer of electromechanical subsystems looked into investing in a new CNC machine or outsourcing its work. But the company wanted to keep its manufacturing in-house, and was worried about sinking a large capital expenditure into a new machine that would have required training a full team of technicians. The solution came in the form of a collaborative robot from Universal Robots, which could tend the company’s existing CNC machines while doubling their output by running two additional, unattended shifts. With the company’s CNC machine running for four unattended shifts, Whippany Actuation Systems has doubled its output and anticipates ROI on the robot in a little over one year.
