The Whippany museum is a place for train lovers to get their fix and learn a little history. It is an all volunteer run museum and open every Sunday from April to mid-October. They have a restored 1904 freight house that houses a collection of rail and transportation artifacts. They also offer excursion train rides throughout the year on their historic railways. The museum and the railroads are run by a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving and celebrating New Jersey’s rich transportation heritage.
The museum is a great place for the kids to explore because they have many interactive exhibits. Some of the exhibits include a large model train that demonstrates how a train works. There are many different displays that show how trains have changed over the years. They even have a section that is set up as if it was a classroom with desks and ink wells that have not changed much over the years. There are also old tombstones that were found in the cemetery and some of them have cherubs or winged skulls on them showing morality images (Whippany Burial Yard pamphlet).
This is a great place to bring the kids and learn about how trains have changed over the years. The docents are very knowledgeable and take their work seriously. They were very patient and answered any questions that we had. We had a great time and we will definitely be going back again.
One of the best parts about this museum is that it is free to enter. They also have many different events that are offered during the year such as train excursions and an Easter Bunny Express where the Easter bunny comes to visit with children. They also have a small gift shop with books, toys and other items to purchase for the kids.
I really enjoyed my visit to the Whippany museum and would highly recommend it to any train enthusiasts. This is a great place to take the family and it is free to enter which makes it affordable for everyone. I will be returning again in the future to see what new things they have added to the museum and to ride on the train.
