Located in the town of Whippany, this museum has been open since 1965 and is dedicated to preserving the heritage and history of the railroads of New Jersey. Its collection is made up of a wide variety of railroad cars and other railway artifacts. The museum is open to the public every Sunday from April to mid-October. Its extensive structural exhibits include the 1904 freight house and its outstanding collection of rail and transportation artifacts, as well as a classic wooden water tank and dozens of historic railcars and exhibits.
The museum has the largest collection of American-built standard gauge steam locomotives displayed in the state. Among its collection are one of the oldest locomotives in America – Southern Railroad Class H4 2-8-0 No. 385; Texaco Fireless Cooker No. 7240, built in 1937 for industrial switching; and one of the newest steam locomotives still in existence, U.S. Army No. 4039, built in 1942 for World War II service. The Museum also houses a large collection of historical railway cars, including Pennsylvania Railroad N6b cabin car No. 981590 and New York, Susquehanna and Western Whitcomb switcher No. 151.
The museum is home to a number of other exhibits that offer a glimpse into the past and present of railroading. You will be able to view and learn about a wide range of trains, including the mighty diesels that are used on modern tracks throughout the country. You will also be able to see the many different facets of railroading, from the operations to the maintenance. The museum also has two operating model train layouts and an extensive collection of photographs and prints.
