The Whippany Railway Museum is an all-volunteer non-profit, operating heritage railroad that preserves and displays historic rail equipment and artifacts. We are also a fun destination for families to learn about and ride our nostalgic train rides.
Located in the picturesque town of Whippany, New Jersey, our museum and train park is home to one of the largest collections of historic railroad equipment and artifacts in the entire state. The Museum is dedicated to preserving the heritage and history of railroads in New Jersey through the restoration, preservation, interpretation and operation of historic railroad equipment and memorabilia.
Our 501(c) 3 non-profit organization operates on donations from the public and our excursion train rides serve as a major source of funding. Proceeds from these rides will further enhance the Museum’s collection and historic preservation efforts.
The museum features a large assortment of restored rail cars and locomotives, historic railroad exhibits and two working model train layouts. It’s a great place for train enthusiasts of all ages to spend the day learning about and viewing the largest standard gauge historic preservation railroad in New Jersey.
The Museum’s story began in 1965 when the Morris County Central, a steam excursion railroad, was established at its current location in Whippany. Employees of the MCC formed a non-profit group and started displaying a small collection of railroad memorabilia in one half of the original Morristown & Erie freight house, which was located directly across from the stone passenger station. In 1967, the freight house was moved to its present location at the Museum.
On our Whippany Excursions, you’ll be transported back in time to the golden era of railroading as you ride along our historic tracks. The train ride will take you through the scenic landscape of Morris and Essex Counties. You’ll be able to see the remnants of Glacial Lake Passaic, wildlife and beautiful rural scenery. Your trip will also include a thrilling ride high above the gorge of the Passaic River on our steel bridge.
We have several different excursions throughout the year. During Christmas, we offer THE POLAR EXPRESS Train Ride, which includes a visit from Santa and his helpers as well as onboard entertainment and caroling. All passengers receive a silver sleigh bell to remember their special journey!
We also have an Easter Excursion where your little ones will be able to meet the Easter Bunny and participate in activities. In addition, they will be able to enjoy a ride aboard our vintage coach cars adorned in festive holiday decor.
We invite you to treat your Grandparents to a relaxing afternoon on the all-volunteer, non-profit Whippany Railway Museum’s excursion train. You’ll be able to relax while enjoying a round-trip, 10-mile ride through Morris and Essex Counties. And your Grandparents will enjoy being able to sit in one of our classic cabooses, which were the way railroad workers traveled and worked for over 130 years, when virtually every freight train in North America was trailed by a caboose.
